Today is a busy day at work for me. I have a lot to do, but I wanted to take a minute to post another benefit. I think this one is something we don't typically think about as a benefit, but it absolutely is! Today's benefit is:I no longer have to worry about when I will have my next nicotine feeding! As a smoker, if I had a day like today, I would be stressed out by this point because I would feel like I needed a cigarette, but I wouldn't know exactly when I would have a chance to take a smoke break. I would work hard to finish my tasks, but the nagging thought would persist, "when am I going to get a smoke break... I NEED a smoke break!!! Maybe I could sneak out for 5 mins when my boss goes to her meeting, but then I might not finish this report in time before she gets back. I could wait until lunch, but I might have to eat at my desk. Maybe I could go smoke first, then get some food downstairs and bring it back to my office. Or I could smoke after I order my food, while their making it. And then how long will I be stuck in the office before I can go down again! Maybe I should try to smoke 2 cigarettes so I can last all the way to 5pm." As you can see - this persistent worrying, planning, and scheming takes up a lot of mental energy and focus. All the time I used to spend obsessing over my next smoke break, I can now spend obsessing over the best way to present the report I'm working on! I can get my work finished more quickly, and have a less-stressful day, knowing that I still have plenty of time to finish everything I need to do, since I don't have a need any longer to feed that crazy addiction!Jason - 26 days to Gold!Free and Healing for Eleven Months, Five Days, 10 Hours and 40 Minutes, while extending my life expectancy 23 Days and 13 Hours, by avoiding the use of 6789 nicotine delivery devices that would have cost me $1,893.23.

First of all - thanks to Laura and Sylvia for your kind words - and I'm glad you have found some benefit to my (and others') posts, after all, that's what ffn is all about! Johnnie - Glad you stopped by to say hi - I'm about to go check up on your journal as well - always found it interesting and inspiring! Keep singing your songs! ;-)
The other day I posted a benefit about sustaining intimacy with your partner, but felt that I needed to post something for anyone who falls in the category of "wookin pah nub". If none of you remember the spoof of Buckwheat singing your favorites songs, sorry you probably won't get the reference. Anyway - if you are currently searching for that special someone, I have some good news:
There are a LOT more available fish in the pond if you are a non (or ex) -smoker!
Not sure if many of you have filled out an online dating profile (or been to a speed-dating session), but one of the most common, and most important questions in some cases, is "How often do you smoke?" That's because for a non-smoker, being with a smoker is not at all a pleasant experience. If you are going through your quit right now and are experiencing grief from your still-smoking significant other, part of the issue may be a certain amount of jealousy. Your still-smoker might be a little bit intimidated knowing that you have just made yourself much more attractive to the large majority of people in the US (and around the world). It is becoming common knowledge now that if you smoke "socially", or "occasionally", that tends to not be the end of it. People know that smokers tend to increase their usage over time, not decrease it. And for a non-smoker, having to kiss an ashtray just is not very sensual or exciting. So remember, keep your breath fresh and your dating options open by continuing to keep that daily commitment to Never Take Another Puff!

Thanks Sylvia for your
post. I am so excited about this month - finishing up my first trip
around the sun sans-nicotine! It really has been the best year of my life
(so far). Today I'm going to steal your benefit, and say:
I am made more beautiful
(literally) by not smoking!
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, Cigarette smoking causes biochemical changes in
our bodies that accelerate aging. Research shows that a person who smokes 10 or
more cigarettes a day for a minimum of 10 years is statistically more likely to
develop deeply wrinkled, leathery skin than a nonsmoker. It also has been shown
that people who smoke for a number of years tend to develop an unhealthy
yellowish hue to their complexion. Additionally, a study conducted in 2002 showed
that facial wrinkling, while not yet visible, can be seen under a microscope in
smokers as young as 20.
These signs can be greatly diminished, and in some
cases avoided, by stopping smoking. Even people who have smoked for many years,
or smoked heavily at a younger age, show less facial wrinkling and improved
skin tone when they quit smoking.
