I spent some time reading your posts this morning Joe and it is great that you have documented your quit well. As I get ready to move out this newbie section I want to be able to look back and remember that this is not a month I ever want to repeat and it has not been easy, but I hasten to add for anyone at the beginning of their quit that it gets easier every day. I noticed Joe that you started to right down your daily routine as a smoker so I thought I would make a table of my typical day, before and after smoking, to remind me that I do not want to ever go back down that road. Here it is below.
Smoker Ken Vs Ex-Smoker Ken
Woke up feeling groggy , coughed up thick mucus, got up went straight
to the back door, still in dressing gown for first cig of the day. (rain, snow or shine)Made coffee went to
back door for second cig.
Wake up feeling sharp and alert and go to kitchen and make porridge (can’t
skip breakfast anymore) followed by coffee.
Shower and dress
Get in car and immediately douse my clean clothes and body in 2 or 3
cigs worth of smoke. Now I smell bad
for the office or first appointment, often soaked from keeping window open in
Turn up wherever I am going still clean and fresh with no ash and
rain to smudge into my suit.
Half way through first meeting , getting twitchy from withdrawal and
often looked for excuse to cut meeting short so I could feed my habit (I’m in
sales so probably lost a fortune doing this)
Take as long as is needed to get proper professional job done.
Repeat the above 2 section several times.
Repeat the above 2 sections several times
Arrive home smelling like an ashtray and greet kids who would often
just let you have it and say”Dad, you stink of smoke” …….successfully ignored these comments for
Arrive home, kids, wife get much closer and hug longer ( my new
dopamine fix…hug everyone).
Get changed and cleaned up with new clean clothes and immediately
head for the back door so now stink as a smoker again.
Get changed and cleaned up and relax into my favourite chair, catch
up on email news etc.
Have dinner and rush it so I can get back out for another fix. Not really enjoying the food as my taste
buds and smell doesn’t work very well.
Have dinner and enjoy every lovely bite and stay seated to allow
proper digestion while catching up with the family’s news.
Spend the next 4 hours interrupting everything by having to go
outside for a fix. Can’t watch a whole
film without a couple of breaks.
Always panicking that I have enough cigs to get me through the night.
Spend the next four hours doing what I want to do when I want to do
it. When I do go outside it is to have
a pleasant walk, smell the air and the trees and the burning wood etc. And I can walk up and down hills as far as
I like without getting breathless.
Try and get a few cigs in before bed but inevitably will be in
withdrawal when I get there. Fall into
a restless sleep and often get up in the middle of night and head to the back
door for a smoke.
Get ready for bed and fall into a good sleep and often sleep all
