HI Drew and Wife,
congratulations to both of you and welcome to freedom.
I think you'll find some of the answers in this post.
http://whyquit.com/whyquit/A_Symptoms.html
another thing that I would recommend is to bookmark this page.
http://www.whyquit.com/FreedomIndex.html
this one is an alphabetical index of most frequented posts and you can find a wealth of answers and information there.
then, there's Joel's book, which you can download for free...it really doesn't take that long, or that much room on your hard drive and can be a godsend when you just can't get here to look things up.
you'll find the link to do that at the bottom of this page.
http://whyquit.com/joel/index.html
but what you wanted was immediate answers from someone who's going through the same thing, right???
well, ok. here goes.
1.Yes, it will get better and soon. HOnestly. You've already gone through the worst part of the physical withdrawal and started to feel better, now Bang, here comes the psychological part of the addiction to kick you in the back of the head.
What you're feeling now are triggers....automatic reminders from your brain that you "used to" smoke at certain times or while doing certain things. YOur brain doesn't know yet that you've quit...you've got to retrain it.
Everytime you get one of those "trigger" craves, recognize it for what it is, and tell your brain that things have changed and you don't smoke anymore...things will get a little bit better.
Now your brain is relearning how to live without satisfying that addiction. Trust me, it's happy about that too! It will now start sending out different signals to your body that will let you feel good without nicotene. Give it time, comfort will come, and when it does, it's just wonderful.
1B...Do not, I repeat do NOT go out and buy cigarettes. Don't put yourself through that kind of temptation. Come here and post, read, study, chill out. Someone will be here to help you get through it.
2. Not sure about the coffee thing, other than it's clearly another of those trigger situations. Apparantly, once you've satisfied half of the trigger, your brain already understands that's as far as it's going to go and accepts that. I'd say that's a great sign that you are healing and doing well.
It could also be that you are confusing one craving for another. Sometimes we thing we want a smoke, when what we're really feeling is Hunger, Anger, Loneliness, or Tiredness sometimes Thirst.

3. Yes, someday, you will be able to drink again without wanting to smoke. For right now, it might be better to put that aside until you're strong enough in your quit that the alcohol can't touch it. Marty says that eventually, we get so strong in our quits that it' like crossing a street...we look both ways without thinking about it...and someday, we'll NTAP without dwelling on that either. I believe him, cause I've felt times like that already.
4 Now that's getting dangerously close to giving out medical advice, which is a no-no. Check out that first link that I posted. If it's just kinda tightness...that seems to happen to a lot of us...even mild heartburn in the first week or two. If it's anything more than mild....don't take chances, check with your doctor. And even if it's mild and it doesn't go away in a couple of days, still have it checked. It's just safer that way. Just because we've quit smoking doesn't mean that our body isn't still coping with everything it ordinarily might...could be real heartburn from something you ate...could be something totally unconnected to smoking. why take the chance?? You've just braved it through a couple of really tough days to make a better and longer life for yourself....don't go risking it by taking any kind of medical advice online. ok???
Best of luck to you and the wife on this, your last quit.
You can do it
It does get better.
