Hi Lucie, I too was a closet smoker for the last decade of my 36 years as a smoker.  My shame at lying each time I lit up is the only active vestige of my life as a smoker.  If I had children I would definitely come clean in the hopes of influencing them to either not start or to stop smoking.

I think that the shame of coming clean far out weighs the potential benefits of helping your daughter to see the path to freedom.  Don't underestimate the value of your discussion with your daughter.  Even if she does not immediately stop smoking, at least she may well quit many, many years sooner than she would without that discussion.  Each year earlier that she quits is a year of not damaging her body.

This, for what it is worth, Lucie.
