Paula,
You can do this one day at a time. One trigger at a time one moment at a time when necessary. It will get easier and you won't have to fight this forever. But this educated cold turkey quit is worth it.
In the beginning for me I took in a slow eight count deep breath, held the deep breath for an 8 count, let it out slowly for an eight count and then held the expelled air for an eight count. Then repeated the cycle. while doing this I would picture my lungs getting pinker, my heart beating more slowly and calmly, and envisioned my brain and arteries getting clear and pictured sparks of positive thought running through my brain.
Also writing all the things that were reasons why I wanted to quit and keeping that a running list. I added a lot to it. I brushed my teeth a lot and appreciated my newly non-nicotine mouth and tongue. Washed scarves in a nice smelling detergent and wore them just because they smelled good. Read the Benefits Time Table on whyquit.com
to create positive reenforcement.
Keep educating yourself and read and watch all the videos Joel posts for you. I also particularly enjoyed and connected to a string called Reminders from the Executive Assistant. Your addict brain is just doing what you have programed it to do... Give yourself a break! You can do this! You won't have to fight for it forever! It will get easier.
One puff would be too many and a thousand would never be enough!
I'm so glad to be free of the addiction, an addiction I had almost decided would rule my life to the end.... So glad I found this site.
