When I first started smoking at the ripe young age of 12, I smoked Marlboro Reds. My older brother smoked them and he was my source of getting the smokes. My parents were dead set against smoking. My Dad smoked Camels (no filters) until I was about 8 years old. Which reminds me - my first puff was actually when I was about 5 years old. Snuck one of Dad's.
Anyway, as time progressed, the Marlboro Reds were leaving a funky coating in the back of my throat. Constantly feeling like I had to cough. I switched to the Marlboro Lights. Smoked them for many years.
I don't remember exactly when Merits his the market, but they were on special, reduced prices and claimed to be the lowest nicotine and tar cigarettes on the market. I started smoking Merits until I felt that thick coating in the back of my throat again. So, I switched again, to Merit Ultralights. Lighter tar/nicotine again. I smoked those until Merit came out the the "Ultima". Lowest yet.
Over the 30+ years that I smoked, I was constantly changing brands to reduce the amount of tar/nicotine I was ingesting. My body sure didn't like the smokes, but I guess addiction is addiction. As long as I was still getting the nicotine. Sure, my consumption would jump up for a while. Then eventually I always ended up smoking about 1 pack to 1 1/2 a day. The Merit Ultimas were my favorite. That is the last brand of cigarette I ingested on 6/11/2002.
I am now free! I will Never Take Another Puff, One Day at a Time.
Thank you Joel. Thank you Freedom.
