Kris, I just finished submitting a letter to the editor of a Florida newspaper that I thought I'd share. Nabi's new nicotine vaccine has gone into testing and the hype is just too much. Many reporters fail to stop and think how the information they provide is being recieved by thousands of junkie minds looking for hope and willing to delay quitting while waiting on that next promised magic cure. Anyway, this is the letter and it allows you to see how I tried to help smokers find us without having my letter thrown out because it contained a URL that the vast majority of editors will refuse to print. Again, they just don't have time to investigate these sites and the risks of printing internet addresses are substantial. Title: Nicotine Vaccine No Cure Dear Editor, On August 7 Glenn Singer's article told how human testing is beginning for a new quit smoking vaccine being developed by Nabi but failed to mention that early animal studies found that the vaccine was only been able to block two-thirds of nicotine from getting through to the brain. This suggests that smokers who take the vaccine and then decide that they are not comfortable receiving just one-third of their normal daily nicotine intake, may be able to overcome the vaccine's effects by smoking three times as much - talk about health risks! Cure? Smoking has already killed 17,500 Floridians this year with another 12,500 to die before year's end. The time for waiting on half-baked cures has long passed. The nicotine gum and patch were promised cures too and a March 2003 study combined and averaged all the latest studies and found that 93% of patch users had relapsed to smoking within six-months. The internet is loaded with wonderful free quit smoking tools - including support groups for cold turkey quitters - that I encourage every smoker to immediately explore. John R.
