There is so much more to quitting than overcoming the physical and psychological addiction.
For me (and I believe many others), smoking was also a handy way to hide from other issues. It was always easier to turn to cigarettes than to face certain realities.
Relationship not going well? Have a cigarette. Career not turning out as you planned? Have a cigarette. Unhappy with your appearance? Hate where you live? Bored with your routine? Have some cigarettes.
Now that I have nothing to hide behind, I'm forced to face these issues head on. I don't think it's a coincidence that so many Freedom members have mentioned switching jobs, moving to new homes, even ending unhappy relationships. The smoky rose-colored glasses are off.
Though this part of quitting has been hard in some ways, it's also the aspect of my newfound freedom that I'm most thrilled about. If there are things I've been hiding from, I say, "Bring 'em on!"
If I can overcome my addiction, what can't I overcome?
