Most Important Quitting Lesson of All
While using quitting counters and meters to track progress is fun and inspiring, no meter can undo the consequences of just one hit of nicotine. Nicotine addiction is a brain wanting disorder, illness and disease that is every bit as real and permanent as alcoholism. While most quitters walk away from cheating thinking that they've gotten away with it, within seconds of that first puff, up to half of their brain's dopamine pathway receptors become saturated by nicotine. Once the saturation wears off they'll find their brain wanting and begging for more. It is not a matter of weakness or a lack of willpower but the design and function of brain dopamine pathways, to make activities which activate those pathways extremely difficult to ignore.
We call this lesson the Law of Addiction, that one is too many and a thousand never enough. Knowledge is power. We hope you'll visit WhyQuit often and become more dependency recovery savvy than your addiction is strong. There was always only one rule ... no nicotine today! Yes you can!
A pack-a-day Greek software designer, on April 21, 2003 Harry went "cold turkey" claiming freedom from nicotine, and on June 6th unveiled his own meter. Graphically themed upon the milestone clubs of WhyQuit's Freedom from Tobacco (a forum dedicated exclusively to the art and science of abrupt nicotine cessation), aside from just helping you celebrate all major milestones, users are awarded Green status at one month, their quits are "Bronzed" at 3 months, turn Silver at midyear, and are awarded Gold status at one year. In addition to tracking standard features such as time quit, cigarettes not smoked, and money and life saved, Harry's meter offers the unique ability to not only track the quit statistics of others (friends, family and online favorites) but also to easily copy their latest statistics to your computer's clipboard (as well as your own) for quick pasting in message board posts and e-mails. With one click you'll see all the latest milestones of each quitter entered and with another click you can send them an e-mail of "support." Yes, at last, a meter design to not only foster and celebrate your own achievement, but to interactively support and encouragement the continuing success of those around you!
Quit Keeper 1.09 is a free quit meter that tracks various statistics as you quit smoking, including how long you have been quit, money saved, cigarettes not smoked, life saved and listing anniversaries. It allows for posting of stats and also tracks the increasing price of cigarettes. It's a quick, small download of only about 100k.
"The current version of SilkQuit calculates and tracks the time you have been quit, the total amount of money not spent on your habit, and the time you've saved by not smoking. Your quit duration is shown in years, calendar months, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds. By using a configurable hot-key combination you can paste detailed quit information into any document, handy if you're involved with an online support forum."
Afraid of downloading quitting counter programs into your computer or on the road traveling? QuitSmokingCounter.com offers the first online quit smoking meter that allows users to calculate their quit smoking statistics in either U.S. or Euro Dollars, copy the results to their computer's clipboard and transport them for easy pasting onto message boards or into e-mails.

Quit meters can be fun but with nicotine smoking having a 50% adult kill rate you truly are engaged in a life or death struggle. Have you met Bryan, Noni, Sean, Kim or any of the more than two million middle-aged nicotine addicts who each year wait too long and allow their addiction to kill them?
